What Do You Consider an Emergency?
Emergency situations can arise at the most unexpected moments. There are many different types of emergency situations. A common dental emergency is when you’ve had a tooth knocked out.
If you have severe, long lasting tooth ache, it can be considered an emergency. So is any time you’ve got an object stuck between your teeth not easily removed, you’ve got a deep cut in your mouth, or you have an abscess.
Emergency situations need to be addressed quickly.
What Should I Do If I Have an Emergency?
- First, keep calm. In an emergency, it’s important to maintain a clear head. Determine if you need to take first-aid steps.
- If you must take first-aid steps, make sure that you thoroughly clean your hands first.
- If you have a knocked-out tooth, never handle it by the root, since it’s very delicate, and rinse it in warm water to clean. Try to reinsert the tooth into the socket. If you can’t, then make sure to keep it moist and bring it with you when you visit your dentist.
- If you have severe bleeding, put pressure on the area that’s bleeding with gauze.
- If anything is stuck between your teeth and can’t be removed with gentle flossing, leave it alone.
- Do not put aspirin directly onto a wound, tooth, or gums. If you need to take a pain reliever, an anti-inflammatory is recommended, like ibuprofen. You can rinse with warm water to clean the wound/tooth and aid in pain relief.
- If you have an abscess, rinse with warm salt water. Try to avoid touching it with your fingers. Take pain relievers if necessary.
- If you have swelling or a lot of discomfort, you can use a cold-compress against the swollen area. It should help relieve both the swelling and discomfort.
- Once you’ve completed your first-aid, call our office right away. We handle same-day and after-hours emergencies.
